“What the hell’s going on?? This doesn’t make sense!” Ben shouted as he ran from room to room. Sara cried uncontrollably as she checked every closet, cabinet, and crawlspace until the unnerving realization set in. Mia was gone. Ben followed the sobbing until he found Sara on the floor in Mia’s bedroom after her legs gave out. She gathered herself and ran to their bedroom for the phone.

“911, what’s your emergency?”

“My daughter’s missing!”

“Okay, when was the last time you saw her?”

“This morning at our home. She was in her room playing, and I left for work. My husband was in the shower, and he was going to take her to daycare.”

“How old’s your daughter?”

“Five,” Sara answered the questions as quickly as possible, as if responding faster was going to bring Mia back.

“When did your husband see her last?”

“Before he got in the shower. When he got out, she was gone. He thought I took her to daycare, but I didn’t.”

“Okay, and where are you located?”

“414 Grove Run Drive...”

“Alright. Do you remember what she was wearing when you last saw her?”

“Let me think. She had on a long-sleeved pink shirt. It had Ariel on it from The Little Mermaid and black pants.”

“Her hair,” Ben whispered.

“She’s got light brown hair with some blonde highlights, and it was up in a ponytail.”

“Thank you. Alright, ma’am. I’m going to transfer you to the police. Please stay on the line, okay?”

Ben had his ear up to the phone as he chewed the nail on his thumb.

“Ma’am?” the police officer asked.

“I’m here.”

“What time was it when you last saw your daughter?”

“It was early this morning. I left around quarter after seven, so a minute or two before then. I kissed the top of her head. I should’ve taken her with…” She began to lose her composure as the officer tried to keep her focused and calm.

“And it was a few minutes ago you realized she was missing?”

Sara cleared her throat and somewhat composed herself. “Yes, that’s right.”

“Alright, we’re going to send out a patrol car. They should be there in about five to ten minutes. Sit tight.”

She hung up, and the two of them stood there trying to comprehend the unimaginable situation they were suddenly thrown into. Their world had been ripped apart without warning.

Ben and Sara were on the couch while an officer asked the same questions they had already answered on the phone. Another officer took a look around the house, particularly in Mia’s room.

“Do you have any idea where your daughter might’ve gone? Any friends live around here or favorite shops in the area?”

“No,” Ben replied, dumbfounded. The officer wrote diligently in his notebook as if he was penning a novel. Ben was growing impatient with the near silence except for the loud, closed-mouth chewing of the officer’s gum and the incessant, never-ending scratching of the pencil on the pad. “What could you possibly be writing?? I said one word!” The officer paused his notetaking to look up. “There’s got to be a
